International Expert to help GWI Tackle Non-Revenue Water & Improve Operations (bericht van GWI)

The Guyana Water Incorporated has secured the services of Mr. Theo Smit – an international expert in drinking water, sanitation and non-revenue water (NRW).

It is expected that with his expertise, the water utility will be on a path to becoming more financially viable, while improving its services to customers.

Welcoming Mr. Smit on Wednesday, Managing Director of GWI, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles encouraged him to be frank in his analyses of the company. Dr. Van West-Charles also expressed confidence that GWI will be able to better realise its mission and vision, with the assistance of Mr. Smit.

The Managing Director also reiterated GWI’s commitment to equity and water quality.

Executive Director of Operations, Mr. Dwayne Shako stressed the importance of addressing the issue of NRW, while pointing to the need for assistance to reduce the cost related to the water treatment process.

Following an introduction to key staff members in GWI’s boardroom, Mr. Smit expressed his appreciation to work with GWI and registered his delight in employees’ eagerness to learn new methodologies. He highlighted that the geographic information system (GIS) is a tool that can be used to map non-paying customers on the distribution system. 

Mr. Smit, who is the Secretary of the Water is our World Foundation in Holland, will be in Guyana for three months to assist GWI in improving its operations.
